Sun & water old life givers: Peace Song for 12/21/2011

Happy Solstice! Hope you are feeling in tune with nature. Winter Solstice will occur at 5:30 UTC [12:30am EST] on Thursday, December 22nd. (Late Wednesday night!). Reaching the Winter Solstice point means that the daylight hours will grow longer again. (Today was the shortest “day” of the year. Could you feel it?)

The Peace Song for December 21st is “Sailing Down This Golden River” by Pete Seeger. You can find the lyrics in the Rise Up Singing songbook on page 235. On this shortest day of the year, it is nice to think of floating down a golden river on a warm, sunny day.

Simplicity in this busy, holiday season: Peace Song for 12/19/2011

Simple Gifts is the Peace Song of the Day for December 19th. It is a Shaker song written by Joseph Brackett in 1848. You can find the lyrics to this song, as well as additional, new lyrics about loving, poverty, and liberty, in the Rise Up Singing songbook.

This song causes me to reflect on the idea of Voluntary Simplicity — keeping things simple, and doing with less, even if you can afford more. At this holiday season, it is nice to enjoy the simple gifts of family and sharing. Hope you will consider shopping less, making your own presents, and studying ideas about Voluntary Simplicity. You can find books on that topic at your local book store, or at Powells Books: here.

Heart of snow: Peace Song for 12/16

Snowman by The Nields is the Peace Song of the Day for December 16th. You can find this song on their album “Live From Northampton”.

This song contributes to personal peace, by allowing one to alleviate angst. The song is from the point-of-view of a proud, aching snowman who asserts that he is cold and does not need anyone. It is a wonderful metaphor for the need to feel and express emotions, as taught by Nonviolent Communication.

Peace Song for 12/1/2011: Getting The Holiday Spirit

Since it is the first day of December, we decided it was okay to insert a little holiday spirit into the mix. (We think it’s okay to be sentimental, as long as you don’t put up Christmas decorations before Thanksgiving!)

So, with the holiday spirit in mind, the Peace Song of the Day is the interwoven song, “Peace On Earth/Little Drummer Boy“. This song was created especially for a Bing Crosby TV holiday special. It is performed by Bing Crosby and David Bowie. It resonates with warmth, compassion, and a harmony between the ying and the yang.
