Simplicity in this busy, holiday season: Peace Song for 12/19/2011

Simple Gifts is the Peace Song of the Day for December 19th. It is a Shaker song written by Joseph Brackett in 1848. You can find the lyrics to this song, as well as additional, new lyrics about loving, poverty, and liberty, in the Rise Up Singing songbook.

This song causes me to reflect on the idea of Voluntary Simplicity — keeping things simple, and doing with less, even if you can afford more. At this holiday season, it is nice to enjoy the simple gifts of family and sharing. Hope you will consider shopping less, making your own presents, and studying ideas about Voluntary Simplicity. “My Grandfather’s Clock Lyrics“, a song written in 1876 by Henry Clay Work, is the Peace Song of the Day for December 2nd. (Yup…needing to catch up again, busy weekend…). You can find the lyrics to this song in our favorite campfire book, Rise Up Singing, in the Time section, page 224.

Worried Occupation Blues: Peace Song for 11/27/2011

Worried Occupation Blues is the Peace Song of the Day for Sunday, November 27, 2011. This song is based on the traditional song, Worried Man Blues. Kimberly added new lyrics. Then, Kimberly and Ian sang it on Youtube as a kind of teaching tape. We are hoping that some more polished singers will pick up the idea, and maybe make their own videos.

Some Fun From Around The World: Peace Song for 11/14/2011

“Everybody Loves A Saturday Night” was the Peace Song of the Day for Monday, November 14th. You can find this song, with the verses for it in 20 different world languages, in the Rise Up Singing songbook on page 85.

Why is such a simple song, with no political message a “peace song”? Well, partly, just because singing it brings joy! Also, this song is often taught in many languages. So, it is a way to create harmony by celebrating other languages and cultures.

“Turn, Turn, Turn” by Pete Seeger is the Peace Song of the Day for November 8th. (Yes, dear readers, I missed a couple of days and am playing catch up!) You can find the words to “Turn, Turn, Turn” — which are adapted from The Bible, Book of Ecclesiastes — on page 228 of the Rise Up Singing songbook.

I am dedicating this song to everyone who feels funny, anxious, excited, or depressed by the changing of seasons and the clocks being adjusted. Take care of yourself, talk to someone if you need to, and realize it is all part of a glorious cycle!

“What Have They Done To The Rain?”  by Malvina Reynolds is the Peace Song of the Day for November 5th. I discovered it in a library book called A Folksong History of America by Samuel L. Forcucci. And, there the song was, in my Rise Up Singing songbook, on page 39.

“Worried Man Blues” is the Peace Song of the Day for November 3, 2011. This is a traditional song. You can find the lyrics in the Rise Up Singing songbook on page 105.
