in Each Time Zone Globally

Via J15global.com: On his birthday and in the spirit of Dr. King’s vision for racial and economic equality, peace, and non-violence, we are holding candlelight vigils to unite our world in a global movement for systemic change.

Wherever we may be, whether in our homes, in city squares, online, Occupies, or at work, we lift a beautiful message high above the political dialogue. We light the dream of a more equitable world in our hearts. We can overcome! Continue reading Sun, Jan 15th: MLK/Occupy Worldwide Vigil for Unity

Tenting Tonight: Peace Song for January 10, 2012

Tenting Tonight On The Old Campground [aka “Tenting Tonight”] is the Peace Song of the Day for January 10th. It is a song from 1863, written by Walter Kittredge. You can find lyrics, chords, and resources for this song in the Rise Up Singing songbook on page 5.

Yes, the song is about war: It was written during the Civil War and is about the lives of soldiers. Though, the song also lists the problems of war, and expresses the yearning for peace. This song was sung by both Confederate soldiers and Union soldiers.

Because the theme is a wish for the war to end, and the subject is camping out in tents, we also thought this would make a good song for occupy activists to use as is or to adapt.

It was sad when that great ship went down: Peace Song for 1/5/2012

“Ship Titanic”, sometimes know as “The Titanic”, “It Was Sad When That Great Ship Went Down”, or “Husbands and Wive”, is the Peace Song of the Day for January 5th. (We are doing catch-up!) It is a traditional song, tracing back to around 1915 or 1916. You can find the lyrics and chords to this song in the Rise Up Singing  songbook on page 206.

This song is related to peace and justice, because it resonates with the stories of how the rich people died on the Titanic, while black people were not allowed on, and poor people were trapped down below.

I also can’t help but relate the story of how the great ship went down with the story of how the big banks in America failed us. How about new lyrics of, “It was sad when those big banks went down…”? This song is ripe for an occupy version.

Some Lyrics:

Imagine all the people singing about peace: Peace Song for 12/30/2011

Imagine There's No Hunger - Strawberry Fie...

What song will thousands of people around the world hear tomorrow, as they watch the ball drop in Times Square, NYC? Probably, John Lennon’s “Imagine”.

Imagine by John Lennon is the Peace Song of the day for 12/30/2011. And, also, for that moment when hundreds of thousands of people around the world sing it together while envisioning a peaceful, New Year.

The song “Imagine” has also resonated with folks from the Occupy Wall Street movement. “Imagine” was one of the tunes sung by the small group of stalwarts who gathered at Liberty Square/Zuccotti Park for Christmas. [See story at DNA Info: here]

Below the first video are links to lots and lot of videos of occupiers singing Imagine.

“Peace Song of the Day” post for 12/29: A song and a message for Spring

The Peace Song of the Day for 12/29 is The Flower Carol. See a video and details at the read more.

I was inspired to think about the hope for Spring today, because of a video message from Reverend Billy Talen. Reverend Billy noted that since Winter Solstice has passed, all of us (including the occupiers) are looking forward with great hope to the arrival of Spring!
